East Tour
Peak to Coast East Madeira 4x4 Experience
Service Description
Our journey begins at the Miradouro do Lombo da Quinta, where a panoramic view unfolds over Funchal, the terracotta rooftops, the shimmering bay, and the green slopes melting into the Atlantic. We then visit Bar O 21, a traditional and friendly spot where guests can savour a fresh Poncha, Madeira’s most iconic drink, while learning about its origin and cultural significance. The adventure continues through the scenic Estrada do Abrigo do Poiso, surrounded by grazing cattle and typical island vegetation, leading us to one of the most breathtaking highlights, Pico do Areeiro (1816m). Standing above the clouds, this is the start of the famous hiking route PR1 to Pico Ruivo, offering dramatic mountain ridges and crisp high-altitude air. Next, we head to Ribeiro Frio, where a short walk guides us to the Balcões Viewpoint, overlooking the UNESCO Laurissilva Forest, with the chance to feed friendly birds. The guide meets guests at the end of the trail, avoiding a return walk. A cosy break follows at Arraial do Ribeiro Frio, perfect for coffee or a warm drink by the fireplace. Shifting into adventure mode, we drive the Fetós Off-Road Track, surrounded by towering endemic vegetation and emerald forest views. We reach an authentic non-touristic viewpoint over Faial Valley, and then descend steep rural “ladeiras” that showcase Madeira’s mountain character. A stop for lunch takes place in Santana, followed by a visit inside the traditional triangular thatched houses to experience how Madeirans lived in past times. Nature calls again at the Água d’Alto Waterfall, a peaceful gem tucked into lush greenery, before we explore the historic Old Santana Road, making photo stops with stunning valley viewpoints. At the Guindaste Viewpoint, glass platforms offer a thrilling walk above the ocean with incredible panoramic photos. We then reach the island’s eastern edge, Ponta de São Lourenço a volcanic, golden-toned landscape where it’s possible to see both north and south coasts, and even Porto Santo on clear days. The tour concludes with a comfortable drop-off back at the chosen meeting point, closing a day filled with culture, nature, adrenaline, and unforgettable views.
