This full-day East Madeira jeep tour combines mountain viewpoints, a walk to Balcões, Santana’s thatched houses and the volcanic coast of Ponta de São Lourenço. Travel with a local guide through scenic roads and the Fetós off-road track, with stops for poncha, photos and time outside the jeep. Allow around eight hours for the route.

The route

Begin with panoramic views over Funchal at Miradouro do Lombo da Quinta and a traditional poncha tasting at Bar O 21. Climb to the summit of Pico do Areeiro at 1,816m, walk to the Balcões Viewpoint over the UNESCO Laurissilva Forest, and tackle the Fetós Off-Road Track through endemic vegetation. Visit Santana's traditional thatched houses, discover the Água d'Alto Waterfall, walk the Guindaste glass platform above the ocean, and finish at the volcanic peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço.

While the storm stopped us from fully enjoying the miradouro views, we were blessed with an incredibly rare snowfall at the peak! Who coulda imagined that?? Is this the Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo hike?

The East tour visits the Pico do Areeiro viewpoint and includes the walk to Balcões. It does not include the full Pico do Areeiro–Pico Ruivo hike or the full Ponta de São Lourenço trail.

Does the route include Santana and Guindaste?

Yes. The planned route includes Santana’s traditional thatched houses and the Guindaste glass viewpoint, as well as Pico do Areeiro, Balcões and Ponta de São Lourenço. Weather or access conditions can require changes to the day’s stops.

Is hotel pickup in Funchal included?

Yes. Pickup in Funchal is included. Pickups outside Funchal have an additional fee.

When do I pay?

You pay in person on the day of the tour. Nothing is charged online when you send a request.

Can I request a German-speaking guide?

Yes, but German-speaking guides are limited and are not available on every departure. Request German guiding when you enquire and wait for our confirmation for your date.

Can you pick us up near Funchal cruise port?
