Spend a full day exploring western Madeira by jeep, from Cabo Girão and the Encumeada ridge to the north coast. The route brings together Porto Moniz’s lava pools, Ribeira da Janela’s sea stacks and the ancient trees of Fanal Forest before crossing Paul da Serra. There is time for a lunch stop and, when conditions allow, a swim.

The route

Begin at Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs with a thrilling glass skywalk 580m above the Atlantic. Cross the Encumeada ridge road, pause at the Véu da Noiva waterfall viewpoint, and enjoy Porto Moniz's famous natural lava pools with time for lunch and a swim. Continue to the wild sea stacks of Ribeira da Janela, the mystical ancient laurel trees of Fanal Forest, and the wide horizons of the Paul da Serra plateau, before descending through fragrant eucalyptus forest and terraced hillsides back to the coast.

  • “Andre's tour was both insightful and charming... or maybe that's all the poncha talking? Haha. For me, the highlight was the local bar he took us to: completely off the tourist path, filled with friendly regulars, his recipe for delicious poncha and tasty little side dishes. While the storm stopped us from fully enjoying the miradouro views, we were blessed with an incredibly rare snowfall at the peak! Who coulda imagined that?? Andre was honest and responsive throughout the drive, answering all our questions openly... while carefully maneuvering across tiny roads and dodging traffic. AND still attentive enough to spot his uncle, father and other family members dotted around the island along the way! He's a true son of the island, and what a welcome to the island! Can I swim at Porto Moniz on this tour?

The route allows time at Porto Moniz for lunch and an optional swim. Bring swimwear and a towel if you want to swim. Pool access and sea conditions affect what is possible; confirm any admission costs when arranging your tour.

Will Fanal Forest be misty when we visit?

Fanal is a planned stop for its ancient laurel trees and forest scenery. Mist depends on the weather and cannot be guaranteed. Visibility and access can also affect the day’s route.

Is hotel pickup in Funchal included?

Yes. Pickup in Funchal is included. Pickups outside Funchal have an additional fee.

When do I pay?

Can I request a German-speaking guide?
